Service Location Protocol (SLP) is an Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standards track protocol that provides a framework to allow networking applications to discover the existence, location, and configuration of networked services in enterprise networks.

Although the IETF SrvLoc working group has been concluded for some time now, significant work towards improving and extending SLP continues throughout the IETF. This work includes the submission of RFCs annually for SLP enhancement recommendations, as well as new and updated “service:” templates allowing SLP to be used with newer network services.
